After a short introduction on the anatomy and function of the external female genitals, surgical techniques used for reducing the labia minora as well as procedures to reshape the labia majora are described in detail. With the help of high quality pictures and illustrations, readers gain information not only on the surgical procedures themselves, but also on aftercare, risks, complications and the information patients should receive before surgery. The demand for surgery to enhance the appearance and function of the external female genital area is increasing throughout the western world. However, to date no guidelines or standards have been published in a concise book format. Furthermore, this procedure is not yet included in any trainee program for specialist surgeons. As a consequence, a growing number of cases are unsuccessful, with unpleasing aesthetic and functional results. This book is a valuable source of information for plastic surgeons and also gynecologists who are interested in learning from one of the experts in this field.

In the West, a specific ideal for female genitalia has emerged: one of absence, a "clean slit," attained through the removal of pubic hair and, increasingly, through female genital cosmetic surgery known as FGCS. In The Perfect Vagina: Cosmetic Surgery in the Twenty-First Century, Lindy McDougall provides an ethnographic account of women who choose FGCS in Australia and the physicians who perform these procedures, both in Australia and globally, while also examining the environment in which surgeons and women come together. Physicians have a vested interest in establishing this surgery as valid medical intervention, despite majority medical opinion explicitly acknowledging that a wide range of genital variation is normal. McDougall offers a nuanced picture of why and how these procedures are performed and draws parallels between FGCS and anthropological discussions of female genital circumcision (cutting). Using the neologism biomagical, she argues that cosmetic surgery functions as both ritual and sacrifice due to its promise of transformation while simultaneously submitting the body to the risks and pain of surgery, thus exposing biomedicine as an increasingly cultural and commercial pursuit. The Perfect Vagina highlights the complexities involved with FGCS, its role in Western beauty culture, and the creation and control of body image in countries where self-care is valorized and medicine is increasingly harnessed for enhancement as well as health.

This book discusses all aspects of sexuality in women and in particular explores sexual function and dysfunction in a variety of settings, including the different stages of life and a wide range of major diseases and local conditions. The aim is to refocus attention on the needs and sexual realities of women, providing a fresh point of view that will assist gynecologists, sexual medicine physicians, and urologists in delivery of high-quality care and help women themselves to understand and address sexual problems relating to desire, arousal, orgasm, and sexual pain. Psychological aspects of female sexuality and the impacts of the aging process, pregnancy, and childbirth are carefully examined. Extensive consideration is then given to the effects on sexual function of such conditions as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, neurological disease, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, reproductive disorders, sexual abuse, and drug abuse. Issues of sexual identity and female dysmorphophobias are also considered. The authors are all experts in the field and have a deep understanding of the complexities of female sexuality.
