Praise for Gravity Drive: “I started reading Gravity Drive - Key to the Cosmos after dinner, figuring I'd get a couple chapters into it just to see how it started...and couldn't put it down. I read the whole thing straight through. Well done! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. I loved the aliens.” Jerry Oltion - Nebula Award winning author of over 15 novels and 150 published stories, including numerous Authorized Star Trek novels. (Note: This is a work of fiction) - Since the invention of rockets, their propulsion systems have gone essentially unchanged. We still depend on blasting some type of propellant out the rear to shoot the rocket forward (Newton’s Third Law - check it out). There’s two main problems with this method: propellant is always in limited supply, and therefore you can’t really go very fast. This is why we use gravitational assist from planets and the Sun, to get us places. It still takes years, and that’s just inside our solar system. What if we could go to our Moon in hours or Mars in a couple days, and even turn around mid-flight if we forgot our toothbrush? This is the story behind the development of the Gravity Drive propulsion system, WAIT Spoiler Alert - and the profound effect it has not just on space exploration but on all of humanity, it’s benefits for Earth’s ecology, and most importantly, it’s role in humanities future in the greater galactic community. The story follows an engineer who has a close encounter and decides he’s far more interested in how the UFO flies, than who might be inside. After designing the first gravity drive propulsion system, he receives confirmation of his design when he meets up with two engineers who have been studying the crashed Alien craft from 1947 Roswell. And yes, you’ll finally hear the true story of that night in 1947 Roswell and why the US government has kept it covered up. The three engineers become fast friends and together with NASA they build the first fully functional gravity drive space craft, and fly off to many adventures among the cosmos with a slightly wacky alien AI (the friendly kind) and meet some very interesting aliens. OK - we’re getting into some real spoiler territory here so you’ve been warned, again: After bringing additional advanced technology back to humanity, courtesy of some friendly aliens, our four heroes start humanity down a path of cleaning up the mess we’ve made of our Earth and it’s inhabitants. So it’s time for a very long nap, and we wake up just in time for the second book. It’s thousands of years later and humans have really worked their butts off to make the Earth a paradise once again, when along comes the Universe to snatch it all away. The only hope for saving life on Earth rests with their new best friend, and previously mentioned artificial intelligence - Jason. Hence the title of the second book. With the Ark fully loaded we head into the third book, where we quickly discover that the Universe doesn’t play fair, and is determined to destroy all life on Earth once and for all. It’s time for humanity to get serious about deep space exploration and find us some new homes out there in the cosmos. The only problem is there just aren’t a lot of no vacancy signs. You’ll love the way the trilogy wraps up, and the important messages not so discreetly hidden in the story. After all, they’re important and I don’t want you to miss them in case you fall asleep a lot while reading. I hope you enjoy these three books as much as I enjoyed writing them, and Thank You for your choice in literature. It shows you have Great Taste.

We are delighted to introduce Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium On Religious Life (ISRL 2020). This conference has brought academicians, researchers, developers and practitioners around the world. In collaboration with Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (ICRS) and Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Agency for Research, Development and Training of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) convened bi-annual symposium with the following main theme: “Religious Life, Ethics and Human Dignity in the Disruptive Era”. The 3rd ISRL highlighted the role of religion and ethics in the disruptive era that erode human values, civility, and dignity. In the processes of development and technological revolution, religion can play an essential role in providing spiritual, moral, and ethical guidance. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, religion is perceived in two ways: on the one hand, some faith communities have been willfully negligent and become ‘super-spreaders’ of the dangerous virus by defying stay-at-home orders. Yet, on the other hand, religion has also galvanized its adherents to support economically vulnerable and marginalized communities affected by the lockdown and social restrictions. Likewise, in democratization, religion gives society the necessary dynamic thrust to maintain its vibrancy, resiliency, and sustainability. This Symposium is therefore expected to delve into the complexity of how religion, religious values and faith communities confront the contemporary challenges to uphold ethics and human dignity. We strongly believe that ISRL conference provides a good forum for all academicians, researcher, developers and practitioners to discuss all religious Life, ethics and human dignity. We also expect that the future ISRL conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.

A Memoir of an Educational Biographer

A Memoir of an Educational Biographer
Author: Gerald L. Gutek
Publisher: IAP
Total Pages: 154
Release: 2024-09-01
Genre: Biography & Autobiography
ISBN:

In his interdisciplinary memoir, Gerald Gutek applies history and philosophy of education to educational biography. The author was guided by his focusing goals of exploring his path to becoming an educational biographer and working generalizations with his colleagues in the field. Gutek’s narrative begins with the author’s childhood experiences that inclined him to a career in education, followed by chapters on his doctoral program in the College of Education at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana; his teaching of history and philosophy and education in the School of Education at Loyola University Chicago; his research and writing of biographies of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and Joseph Neef and his textbook, Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education: a Biographical Introduction; and issues and strategies in writing about Maria Montessori. Throughout the book, Gutek analyzes concepts and applications he developed as an educational biographer such as parallel biographies, slice of life writing, reconsidering overlooked and understudied educators, and the role of place and space in telling life stories. ENDORSEMENTS: "Readers both new to educational biography or familiar with the discipline will find a valuable account of the author’s long and varied career as a biographer. From his childhood memory of listening to neighbors’ stories in his grandfather’s grocery store, to encounters with the important teachers in his life, Gutek brings his own story to life. As he recounts the influences on his personal intellectual history and the processes of his research and writing, readers gain valuable insights into the methods of an experienced educational biographer." — Larry Prochner, University of Alberta "For fifty years Gerald Gutek has been and remains one of the seminal and leading voices in the field of educational biography; thus it only makes sense for him to create something new: an intellectual memoir. From his work on Counts in 1970 to his work on Montessori (2016) and her acolytes in the US (2020)--Gutek has reliably bridged the worlds of educational history, educational biography, and philosophical foundations of education; this work cements his legacy. Gutek skillfully interweaves personal and family history with movements in educational history both formal and informal, then explains how these impacted his thinking and writing. Throughout this eminently readable memoir, Gutek also includes political and historical context without engaging in divisiveness. Scholars of life writing should give this a close reading, as Gutek sprinkles nuggets of methodological brilliance throughout the manuscript. Junior scholars would do well to read Gutek’s more substantive sections on the methods used to write each of his books; it is the academic equivalent of Master Class in textual form." — Ed Janak, University of Toledo

Release: 2014-01-01

ISBN: 1472416481

The response of states to demands for free exercise of religion or belief varies greatly across the world. In some places, religions come as close as imaginable to autonomous existences with little interference from government. In other cases religion finds itself grinding out a meagre living, if at all, under the jealously watchful eye of the state. This book provides a legal and normative overview of the variety of responses to minority religions available to states. Exploring case studies ranging from Islamic regions such as Indonesia, Pakistan, and the wider Middle East, to Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China, Russia, Canada, and the Baltics, contributors include international scholars and experts in law, sociology, religious studies, and political science. This book offers invaluable perspectives on how minority religions are currently being received, reviewed, challenged, or ignored in different parts of the world.

One of the many reasons why children and adults love the How to Train Your Dragon films is the music. John Powell composed the music for all three films, maintaining thematic consistency while writing new themes for each film. This book serves as a score guide for the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Every note has been examined to thoroughly discuss the music for Hiccup, Toothless and the other dragons, Vikings, and the enemies and friends that they encounter. It features interviews with the composer and nearly 100 musical excerpts.
