"Holistic Management is a systems-thinking approach developed by biologist Allan Savory to restore the world's grassland soils and minimize the damaging effects of climate change and desertification on humans and the natural world. This long-awaited third edition of this title is comprehensively updated with reorganized, streamlined chapters and new color photos featuring before-and-after examples of land restored through livestock manipulation designed to mimic wildlife migrations of the past. Written for new generations of ranchers, farmers, pastoralists, social entrepreneurs, government agencies, and NGOs working to address global environmental degradation, it offers new hope for a sustainable future."--Page [4] of cover.

Increasingly sophisticated technology and an ever-expand-ing base of knowledge have not been enough to allow humans to halt the worldwide progression of environmental degradation. Extensive fieldwork in both Africa and the United States convinced Allan Savory that neither the forces of nature nor commonly blamed culprits -- overpopulation, poor farming practices, lack of financial support -- were causing the decline of once-healthy ecosystems. He also noted that once land has become degraded, leaving it alone seldom helps revitalize it. Savory eventually came to realize that on the most fundamental level, environmental problems are caused by human management decisions, and only through wholesale changes in the way decisions are made can functioning ecosystems be restored. In response to that startling discovery, Savory began to develop a revolutionary new approach to decision-making and management. Known initially as Holistic Resource Management, and now as simply Holistic Management, it considers humans, their economies, and the environment as inseparable. It includes a common-sense decision-making framework that requires no specialized knowledge or elaborate technology to utilize, and is applicable in any environment or management situation. At the heart of the approach lies a simple testing process that enables people to make decisions that simultaneously consider economic, social, and environmental realities, both short- and long-term.Holistic Management is a newly revised and updated edition of Holistic Resource Management (Island Press, 1988), which was the first book-length treatment of Savory's decision-making framework and how it could be applied. A decade of trial-and-error implementation has strengthened and clarified the book's ideas, and has expanded the scope of the process to include all manner of decisions and management situations, not just those that relate to land and resource management.Holistic Management has been practiced by thousands of people around the world to profitably restore and promote the health of their land through practices that mimic nature, and by many others who have sought a more rewarding personal or family life. This book is an essential handbook for anyone involved with land management and stewardship -- ranchers, farmers, resource managers, and others -- and a valuable guide for all those seeking to make better decisions within their organizations or in any aspect of their personal lives.

Today, a prosperous technology company can be disrupted and put out of business in a blink of an eye. The development of many different technologies that once took years can be done in months or weeks. There are also few examples where the engineering work is completely contained in one company or one engineering organization. Business strategies have evolved. The analysis of competitive forces in an industry has matured to include the concepts of disruptive innovation and coopetition. In an ecosystem characterized by rapid changes in technology and how it is developed, an engineering R&D organization will quickly become irrelevant if it fails to keep the pace of innovation needed to succeed. This book provides readers with a holistic approach to engineering management. We have seen that successful managers create a strong foundation of a common culture that enables learning, value creation, diversity and inclusion. They create organizations that tightly connect the core engineering functions of strategic planning, research and development and are able to comprehend and direct a broader R&D system that stretches well beyond their own organization's boundary. Doing all of this to extract the greatest value in the least amount of time is what we call holistic engineering management. The content for this book is based on over 105 years of combined experience working in a rapidly changing industry. In most chapters, practical examples and case studies of the concepts provided are given. As noted in the foreword by Pat Gelsinger (CEO, VMWare) and in comments from other technology leaders: Aart de Geus (Chairman and co-CEO, Synopsys, Inc.), Aicha Evans (CEO, Zoox, Inc.), William M Holt, (former Executive VP, GM, Intel, Corp.), and Amir Faintuch (Senior VP, GM, GlobalFoundries, Inc.), this book will be valuable for students of engineering management and current engineering managers.

About 15 years ago, we asked ourselves why the methods developed by the research institutions for the management of pests were almost not used by small landholder farmers. It seemed obvious to us that conventional pest control –called “Integrated Pest Management”– was based on a reductionist approach. In reviewing the literature on the subject, we found that our concern was not new or unique. The agreement of some authors with our ideas reinforced our efforts to find a holistic approach to pest management. We took two central ideas to develop the holistic approach: First, pest management actions must put the farmer at the center of the system. Second, pest management must consider not only both pests but the other important components of the system in question. This approach based on the farmers and the systems in which they are immersed, is called “Holistic Pest Management” or HPM. In this book, I present the philosophy and practice of HPM, a new paradigm of pest management.

Engineering and Product Development Management is a practical guide to the components of engineering management, using a holistic approach. It will help engineers and managers understand what they have to do to improve the product development process by deploying new technology and new methods of working in concurrent teams. The book takes elements from six well known and understood bodies of knowledge and integrates them into a holistic approach: integrated product development, project management, process management, systems engineering, product data management, and organizational change management. These elements are framed within an overall enterprise-wide architecture. The techniques discussed in this book work for both huge multinational organizations and smaller enterprises. The emphasis throughout is on practical tools which will be invaluable for engineers, managers, and consultants responsible for project and product development.
