Juan Carlos Augusto is a Lecturer at the University of Ulster, UK. He is conducting research on Smart Homes and Classrooms. He has given tutorials at IJCAI'07 and AAAI'08. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Book Series on "Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments" and the "Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments". He has co-Chaired ICOST'06, AITAmI'06/07/08, and is Workshops Chair for IE'09. The present book includes a set of selected papers from the First International Conf- ence on Agents and Artificial Intelligence (ICAART 2009), held in Porto, Portugal, during January 19–21, 2009. The conference was organized in two simultaneous tracks: “Artificial Intelligence and Agents.” The book is based on the same structure. The selected papers reflect the interdis- plinary nature of the conference. The diversity of topics is an important feature of this conference, enabling an overall perception of several important scientific and tech- logical trends. These high-quality standards will be maintained and reinforced at ICAART 2010, to be held in Valencia, Spain, and in future editions of this conf- ence.
