This volume presents the collated results of a number of archaeological investigations undertaken on the Danish peninsula Djursland over a period of almost 40 years. It begins with the findings of the excavations carried out around the former marine lagoon of VAengeso in the northeastern part of the HelgenAes peninsula. Then follows an overview of an excavation undertaken at the site of Holmegaard, located on the former Stubbe Fjord complex. One of the sites (VAengeso I) has been published previously in 1975, but the interpretation of this locality has been revised in the light of research and the results of other investigations undertaken over the intervening four decades.

This two volume monograph about the region of Thy in the early Bronze Age provides a high resolution archaeological and ecological model of the organisation of landscape, settlements and households during the period 1500-1100 BC. Bordering the North Sea to the west, and the calmer waters of the Limfjord to the east, the region of Thy in Denmark experienced four centuries of intense economic and demographic expansion. By combining results from environmental and economic research (pollen and palaeo-botanical analyses) with intensive field surveys and excavations of farmsteads with exceptional preservation, it has been possible to open a window to the changes that transformed Bronze Age society and its environment during a few centuries of exceptional expansion and wealth consumption. The results from this interdisciplinary venture made it possible to link together the histories of local farmsteads with the wider regional and global history of the Bronze Age in North-western Europe during this period. Here is much to feed on for students and researchers of the Bronze Age alike.

The complex of megaliths near Tustrup is a prime example of the megalithic sites used by early farming communities in Stone Age Europe. Excavated in the 1950s by Moesgaard Museum, the site continues to hold great contemporary and scientific value. Its significance relates primarily to the unusual find of a ritual complex connected to two dolmens and passage grave. The question of why monumental sites played such an important role for early farming communities is currently the focus of several international studies. In Denmark, which boasts one of the world’s largest concentrations of megalithic monuments as well as a strong tradition for research in the area, archaeologists have had a longstanding wish to contribute to this discussion with a comprehensive publication about the unique complex of megaliths near Tustrup. Experts have researched the finds and meticulously analysed the site and its artefacts. The archaeological site of Smakkerup Huse is located at the headwaters of a former fjord known as the SaltbAek Vig on the northwest coast of the island of Zealand, Denmark. Excavations took place in 1989 and again from 1995 to 1997 by a team of Danish and American archaeologists. The site is important for a number of reasons, including the 1000-year record of cultural deposits and the preservation of abundant subsistence remains and wooden objects. Smakkerup Huse documents some of the oldest domestic cattle in Denmark and a new artifact type, a painted pebble, from the Mesolithic. While the settlement area of the site on land had been eroded, the waterlain deposits adjacent to the site preserved a submerged midden and an in situ fishing and boat landing area. The report on the site includes background on the Mesolithic of Southern Scandinavia, a history of research at the site, the geology and topography of the site and its environment, the layout and sequence of the excavations, stratigraphy, the finds, dating, interpretation and significance.
