An authoritative and comprehensive review of the most important clinical issues facing critically ill neurologic and neurosurgical patients. The authors provide pertinent basic, clinical, diagnostic, and management guidelines for all the conditions commonly encountered in the neurocritical care unit, including the management of autonomic disorders that require critical care, postoperative management, and endovascular treatment. The authors also discuss the latest developments in the monitoring of different body systems, emphasizing the management of cardiorespiratory complications and other medical conditions that may threaten the patient's life. Also detailed are the concepts of intracranial physiology and current neuromonitoring techniques, subjects whose understanding is basic to effective management of critically ill neurologic patients. Numerous tables, figures, diagrams, and radiographs simplify and explicate both the diagnostic and therapeutic processes.

This is a practical and accessible review of neurologic critical care in the intensive care unit is single-authored and thus cohesive. The emphasis is on management in day-to-day practice. For the thoroughly updated and expanded second edition, Wijdicks has added new algorithms on outcome prediction in the specific disorders, and five chapters on the organization of the intensive care unit, acute spinal disorders, management of common postoperative neurosurgical complications, and psychosocial issues, ethics, and withdrawal of life support. For quick reference in the ICU the most useful tables and figures have been extracted and reprinted in an accompanying pocket-sized booklet.

Fully updated and revised, the second edition of The Practice of Emergency and Critical Care Neurology puts a more modern approach on the practice of emergency neurological care. When most texts within the field focus on the theoretical aspects, this book concentrates on the management of neurologic conditions, recognition of deterioration of neurologic functions, neurosurgical procedures, and immediate interventions. This text also presents hard data to explain why we do what we do. Dr. Wijdicks condenses essential information into several sections comprising of the principles in recognizing critically ill neurologic patients in the emergency department, the evaluation of symptoms indicating critical emergency, general principles of managing critically ill patients, monitoring devices and diagnostic tests, complete management of specific disorders in the neurosciences intensive care unit, postoperative neurosurgical and neurointerventional complications, management of medical complications, and end of life care. Key Features of the New Edition include 1. Additional chapters on critical consults in surgical and medical ICUs, critical care management, and comprehensive monitoring and biomarkers to reflect new research; 2. Rich illustrations using color photos of patients and drawings of important basic concepts of mechanism of acute neurologic disease; 3. Fully updated and comprehensive reference list; 4. A pocket book of selected tables and figures covering all essential points for quick reference and as a survival guide for house staff. This is the go-to guide for every physician, staff neurologist, neurointensivist, resident, and fellow in training with managing acutely ill neurologic patients.

This book offers valuable guidance to neurointensivists, other neurocritical care staff, and those desiring to develop a neurocritical care unit via a thorough discussion of neurological emergencies and neurocritical care unit organization. This comprehensive volume begins with a review of acute neurological emergencies as managed clinically in the neurocritical care unit. Topics include acute cerebrovascular, neurological, and neurosurgical disorders. The unique aspect of this book is its description of the organization of the neurocritical care unit. We focus on how other services in the hospital interact with and assist neurocritical care operations, telemedicine/telestroke, and neurocritical care personnel and their roles. A review of expected outcomes of neurocritical care conditions is also included. Neurointensivists, neurocritical care unit staff leadership, hospital administrators, and those interested in developing a neurocritical care unit will find Neurointensive Care Unit: Clinical Practice and Organization to be an invaluable guide.

Advances in the management of head and spinal cord injury, stroke, brain tumors, and other disorders have improved dramatically in recent years -- and have led to improved care in the neurosurgical intensive care unit. In this must-have book, an expert team of authors integrate these advances into clinical practice by providing valuable tips and advice on the most current and up-to-date treatment strategies. The text covers all important topics in neurosurgical intensive care, from stroke and non-traumatic hemorrhage to intracranial hypertension, epilepsy management, and withdrawing life support. Plus, you'll find analysis of the newest clinical science on all topics, as well as a key discussion of how advanced bedside monitoring techniques can lead to improved patient care.Key features of Intensive Care in Neurosurgery: Provides the newest clinical science on such timely topics as metabolic and nutritional monitoring, ventilator management, and cerebrovascular and cardiovascular physiology Describes how specific techniques can reverse the abnormal physiology of disease processes Written by top neurosurgeons who are experts in intensive care Addresses controversial topics in the field, including withdrawal of care and declaration of brain death Here is a valuable text for neurosurgeons, neurologists, and critical care specialists who treat patients in intensive care. Residents entering the field will also find it an essential learning tool and board review guide. "Neuroscience nurses practice in a very complex and challenging environment, caring for equally complex patients with multiple needs. Therefore, the contemporary neuroscience nurse engages in high-level assessment, information processing, and decision making. This requires professional competency in not only the specialty of neuroscience nursing practice, but also in general nursing and interprofessional collaborative practice. Much of the care delivered is through teams, with the nurse being an integral team member. The complexities of team communications, coordination, continuity, and safety require new models of practice to achieve optimal outcomes"--

Neuromonitoring is the tool of trade in intensive care, and should incorporate cutting edge technology with patience, repeated clinical observation, careful identification of neuroworsening. The aim of the book is to be of practical use, and to assist the clinical practice of the busy physician. The clinical examination belongs to the introductory section of the book, and an abundance of technology, with specific emphasis on the importance of intracranial pressure, comes in the following parts. Since the patient with an injured brain can have chances only if other organs and systems (as the lungs, and the acid-base equilibrium etc.) are preserved, a section of the book covers the interactions between the affected brain and other organs. The way the brain reacts to different insults has common aspects, as inflammatory responses, edema etc., but also specific features. Sections five to nine summarize the most relevant pathologies, from ischemic to hemorrhagic lesions, trauma, tumors etc. and also mentions new‑comers, as the specific problems related to the expanding field of neuroradiological interventions. Finally, neurointensive care does not exist without knowledgeable nurses. The intracranial pressure measurement starts (or unfortunately ends) with a catheter well maintained, and that becomes vital when the drainage of hydrocephalus is concerned. Dealing with patients with severe brain damage has plenty of ethical implications, up to the problems related to brain death and organ donation. This book is published in two volumes.

This updated and refined new edition is the only book to provide a comprehensive approach to the intensive care of neurologically injured patients from the emergency room and ICU through the operating room and post-surgical period. It reviews neuroanatomy, neuroradiology, and neurophysiology, examines the neurological problems most frequently seen in intensive care, and describes the various types of neurosurgery. General issues are discussed, such as cardiac care, fluids and electrolytes, nutrition, and monitoring as well as more specific conditions and complications including elevated intracranial pressure, seizures, and altered mental states.
