Software defects lead to enormous costs for the software industry and society as a whole. While testing is useful to find bugs, it is insufficient to show the absence of certain kinds of errors or that a program satisfies its specification. Such high levels of software quality can be achieved by software verification, that is, by proving the correctness of a program with respect to its specification. Software verification has seen tremendous progress during the last decade; it continues to be an active research topic and is now also becoming increasingly popular among practitioners. This tutorial contains selected papers from the LASER summer Schools 2007 and 2008, both of which focused on correctness - Applied Software Verification in 2007 and Concurrency and Correctness in 2008. Topics covered include verification of fine-grain concurrency and transactions, the SCOOP model for concurrent object-oriented programming, the Spec# programming and verification system, verification in the prototype verification system PVS, and multi-core chip design.

A landmark in New Zealand literary scholarship, this book provides an extraordinary insight into the formative years of one of New Zealand's most significant poets. Included are 56 letters written by James K. Baxter to his slightly older friend, Noel Ginn, who was at the time imprisoned as a conscientious objector. In these letters, a teenage Baxter pours out his ideas and feelings on life, philosophy, and his own work. Included are the complete texts of the 255 poems written at the time and discussed in the letters. The introduction, an important work of biographical criticism in its own right, puts Baxter's ideas and interests within the context of the wider public events and intellectual and spiritual currents of his time.

Traditionally, models and methods for the analysis of the functional correctness of reactive systems, and those for the analysis of their performance (and - pendability) aspects, have been studied by di?erent research communities. This has resulted in the development of successful, but distinct and largely unrelated modeling and analysis techniques for both domains. In many modern systems, however, the di?erence between their functional features and their performance properties has become blurred, as relevant functionalities become inextricably linked to performance aspects, e.g. isochronous data transfer for live video tra- mission. During the last decade, this trend has motivated an increased interest in c- bining insights and results from the ?eld of formal methods – traditionally - cused on functionality – with techniques for performance modeling and analysis. Prominent examples of this cross-fertilization are extensions of process algebra and Petri nets that allow for the automatic generation of performance models, the use of formal proof techniques to assess the correctness of randomized - gorithms, and extensions of model checking techniques to analyze performance requirements automatically. We believe that these developments markthe - ginning of a new paradigm for the modeling and analysis of systems in which qualitative and quantitative aspects are studied from an integrated perspective. We are convinced that the further worktowards the realization of this goal will be a growing source of inspiration and progress for both communities.

In fall 2000, the Notre Dame logic community hosted Greg Hjorth, Rodney G. Downey, Zoe Chatzidakis, and Paola D'Aquino as visiting lecturers. Each of them presented a month long series of expository lectures at the graduate level. The articles in this volume are refinements of these excellent lectures.
