This study of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue demonstrates how the magazine encourages individual and institutional practices that create and maintain inequality. Laurel Davis illustrates how the interactions of media production, media texts, media consumption, and social context influence meaning. Individuals' interpretations of and reactions to the magazine are influenced by their views about gender and sexuality, views that have been shaped by their social experiences. Based on extensive interviews with Sports Illustrated producers and consumers, as well as analysis of every swimsuit issue from the first in 1964 to those of the 1990s, the book argues that Sports Illustrated uses the swimsuit issue to secure a large male audience by creating a climate of hegemonic masculinity. This practice produces considerable profit but on the way to the bank tramples women, gays, lesbians, people of color, and residents of the postcolonialized world.

The Swimsuit: Fashion from Poolside to Catwalk documents the modern swimsuit's trajectory from men's underwear and circus/performance wear to its unique niche in world fashion. It emphasizes the relationship between fashion, media, celebrity, sport and the cultivation of the modern body. This fascinating book provides an historical, sociological and cultural context in which to view how the swimsuit - and Australia, the country that significantly influenced its modern form - migrated from the cultural and colonial periphery to the centre of international attention. In addition, the book offers new perspectives on national histories of the swimsuit and investigates how traditional European fashion centers have opened up to new markets and modes of living, bringing together influences from around the globe. The Swimsuit is essential reading for students, scholars, and the general reader interested in fashion, popular culture, history, media, sport, and gender studies.

This book "is a guided tour of the cameraperson's art, from the beginnings (the camera obscura, the daguerreotype) to the present day (the digital revolution). We follow the photographer through the city streets, the war zone, the fashion studio and the art gallery, always in search of 'the decisive moment'. Focusing as much on the person behind the camera as on the final image, Dave Yorath looks at the conflicts between the photograph as impersonal record and as a form of self-expression ; between the 'real' image and its digitally manipulated alter ego ; between the photographer as technician and the photographer as artists. Along the way he provides some practical hints and tips to keep you snapping happily." - book jacket.

Criminal Justice Handbook on Masculinity, Male Aggression, and Sexuality discusses masculinity as a social construct, an ideal, and an impediment for males and females. The book explores how the law equalizes, protects, bridles, and enforces masculinity while dealing with crime, which often exploits and exaggerates masculinity. Among the topics addressed are historical and contemporary law, scientific understandings, issues in corrections, military service, the court system, policing, criminal procedure, medicine, and treatment. Because masculinity is often exhibited as a gender role, the book examines aggressive behaviors, emotional responses, interpersonal rules, appearances, sexual desires, and other aspects of human dynamics that may restrict or enhance masculinity. Juveniles are discretely discussed in subsections concerning masturbation, bullying, risk, sexual assault, pornography, and their susceptibility to victimization by peers and adults. Physical differences between males and females are relevant to criminal justice processes and includes bone shape and size, voices, appearance, scent, and genitalia. The male genitalia is thoroughly discussed in the sections dealing with unlawful penetration, male working animals, forensics, sex offenders, frisks and searches, penile injuries, prostheses, obscenity and lewd behavior, transgenderism, and human trafficking. Unique features include: male and female perpetrators of domestic violence, illegal immigration, drug and alcohol trafficking, gangs and gang members, homosexual victims of hate crimes, and the use of steroids. In addition, illustrations are included to clarify specific points. This text will be an excellent resource for careers in correctional education, juvenile justice, criminal justice and male aggression, law enforcement, sociology, and psychiatry.
