How can physicalism be true? How can all facts about the world be constituted by facts about the distribution in the world of physical properties? Shoemaker's answer to this question involves showing how the mental properties of a person can be 'realised' in the physical properties of that person.

The Multiple Realization Book

The Multiple Realization Book
Author: Thomas W. Polger
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Total Pages: 273
Release: 2016
Genre: Family & Relationships
ISBN: 0198732899

Thomas W. Polger and Lawrence A. Shapiro offer the first full investigation of multiple realization--the idea that minds can be realized in ways other than the human brain. They cast doubt on the hypothesis and offer an alternative framework for understanding explanations in the cognitive sciences, and in chemistry, biology, and related fields.

Fundamentals of Integrated Vehicle Realization is a unique and solid contribution to the subject of product development, centered on the automotive industry. Automotive manufacturers and suppliers are under pressure to transform themselves and deliver a higher level of product refinement coupled with more functionality. This could lead to the sprouting of organizational structures not in alignment with the required product development phases. Consequently, many product development initiatives may be cancelled or dropped at later stages despite all the efforts and financial investments. Therefore, it is vital that organizational unity be always intact during any transformation. A highly effective organization should always act as one cohesive entity dedicated to serving the customer with creative aptitude, integrative skills, analytical thinking, and synergistic management. Written by Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed, director of the School of Engineering Technology at Eastern Michigan University, Fundamentals of Integrated Vehicle Realization addresses an essential need for deep knowledge in the realm of vehicle development process, from idealization to market launch. The book covers realization process phases, process and vehicle characteristics and attributes, front-end innovation, virtual and physical realization, among other topics.

Highly recommended." Bill Aulet, Managing Director, The Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship & Professor of the Practice, MIT Sloan School and Author of Disciplined Entrepreneurship "An excellent, practical guide for first time entrepreneurs building physical world products." Laila Partridge, Managing Director, STANLEY+Techstars Accelerator "Product Realization picks up where so many product design books end. Here is the book that explains it all chock full of shop-floor wisdom, fascinating stories and compelling examples." Steven Eppinger, Professor of Management Science and Engineering Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology "Product Realization contains the critical information and roadmap hardware entrepreneurs need as they take their concepts from prototype to production." Ken Rother, Managing Director eLab and Visiting Lecturer of Management, Johnson Graduate School of Management, Cornell University Product Realization: Going from One to a Million delivers a comprehensive treatment of the entire product launch process from beginning to end. Drawing upon the author's extensive first-hand experience with dozens of successful product launches, the book explores the process of bringing a design from prototype to product. It illustrates the complicated and interdisciplinary process with vignettes and examples, provides checklists and templates to help teams, and points out common challenges teams will face. Perfect for both students, start-ups, and engineers in the field, Product Realization: Going from One to a Million will be the go-to reference for engineers seeking practical advice and concrete strategies to launch higher quality products, at the right cost and on time.

Linear Kinetic Theory And Particle Transport In Stochastic Mixtures

Linear Kinetic Theory And Particle Transport In Stochastic Mixtures
Author: Gerald C Pomraning
Publisher: World Scientific
Total Pages: 250
Release: 1991-12-31
Genre: Science
ISBN: 9814505889

This book deals with neutral particle flow in a stochastic mixture consisting of two or more immiscible fluids. After giving an introduction to linear kinetic theory and particle transport in a nonstochastic setting, it discusses recent formulations for particle flow through a background material whose properties are only known in a statistical sense. The mixing descriptions considered are both Markovian and renewal statistics. Various models and exact results are presented for the ensemble average of the intensity in such stochastic mixtures. In the Markovian case, the underlying kinetic description is the integro-differential transport equation, whereas for renewal statistics the natural starting point is the purely integral formulation of transport theory.
