It is one of the most exciting stories in history - the glorious tale of how the powerless, unarmed people of India came together to defy the mightiest empire in the world. The British empire had tightened its noose around a country split by religion, class and caste. But when the people rallied under the tricoloured banner of freedom, it was with a power that stunned even the strongest. No one had seen such a revolution before. what was truly extraordinary was that India won her independence not through an armed uprising but by persistent, peaceful, non violent protes. Ordinary men and women stood up against the might of the Birtish Empire, valiantly facing police batons and guns. They marched singing of freedom and faced the hardships of prison, bonfires of foreign cloth lit up the Non cooperation movement. Thousands followed Mahatma Gandhi as he marched to Dandi. And a nation of millions held its breath proudly as jawaharlal Nehru spoke of its tyst with destiny. not long after, India inspired colonies across the world to stand up and demand independence. Thsi si sth estory of Ahimsa, sayagraha and Swaraj, of non - violence and the struggle for truth - all for the one thing that is most valuable to a people and to a nation : Freedom.

This book studies the politics that make the tricolour flag possibly the most revered of the symbols, icons and markers associated with nation and nationalism in twentieth-century India. The emphasis on the flag as a visual symbol aims to question certain dominant assumptions about visuality. Anchored on Mahatma Gandhi's 'believing eye', this study reveals specificities of visual experience in the South Asian milieu. The account begins with a survey of the pre-colonial period, focuses on colonial lives of the flag, and then moves ahead to explain the contemporary dynamics of seeing the flag in India. The Flag Satyagraha of Jubblepore and Nagpur in 1922–23, the adoption of the Congress Flag in 1931, the resolution for the future flag in the Constituent Assembly of India in 1947, the history of the colour saffron, and the codes governing the flag, as well as legal cases, are all explored in depth in this book.

From Oscar Wilde to James Joyce, from Virginia Woolf to Frank McCourt: three centuries of Irish, English, and American writers in search of the real Ireland. From the editor of the outstandingly popular Italy in Mind comes another superb collection: three centuries of fiction, poems, and essays, from both Irish expatriates and non-Irish visitors. From the comic terror of Frank McCourt's First Communion to the raucous pagan festival Muriel Rukeyser attended in County Kerry in the 1930s; from John Betjeman's lyrical evocation of a ruined abbey in the mist to Eric Newby's hilariously disastrous bicycle trip through Ireland; from William Trevor's gentle Irish clergyman encountering the long angry reach of his country's past tragedies to Brian Moore's wistful return from a life spent in exile, this anthology offers a kaleidoscope of this mysterious, elusive country. For travelers of all kinds, for those who have long been fascinated by Ireland and those who are feeling its lure for the first time, Ireland in Mind will provide a rich and rewarding imaginative journey. Contributors also include: Samuel Beckett, Wallace Stevens, Oliver Goldsmith, Jonathan Swift, Edna O'Brien, Paul Theroux, V.S. Pritchett, Anthony Trollope, George Bernard Shaw, T.H.
