"Forward offers a fresh and imaginative view of magic and mayhem in this first book of a projected trilogy."--Library Journal Young Alex is a slave. But recognized for his potential as an Animist, he is bought by his college and begins rigorous training. Now, Alex must begin his quest for his Anim-the animal with whom he will bond. Alex hopes it will be an extraordinary creature that will help him earn the money he needs to buy his freedom. Unfortunately, his Anim turns out to be . . . well, not nearly what he had hoped. But as Alex finds himself caught in one misadventure after another, he will learn-and learn to appreciate-that there is more to his Anim than meets the eye. This booklet is designed to bridge the gap between handbooks and technical literature and aims at graduate students or experienced readers. Commercial flow sheeting simulation software is increasingly available and is used in the early steps of process design in industry. As to this, more sophisticated and precise models based on activities instead of concentrations should be used. After an introductory chapter there is in Chapter 2 an intensive discussion of reactive phase equilibria of ionic and non-ionic solutes based on chemical potentials. Chapter 3 introduces to multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer. However, the main focus is on the reactive mass transfer on rigid and mobile surfaces where the interfacial reaction, molecular diffusion and adsorption layers are decisive. The respective extraction of zinc with a cation exchanger and of acetic acid with an anion exchanger is discussed as case studies. Since adsorption layers and surfactants have a major impact on liquid-liquid extraction efficiency, the final chapter reviews several tech niques which make use of polymeric species in an extractive process. A short review is also given on extraction apparatus and the hydrodynamics (hydraulic design, droplet populance balances) of columns. Much of the booklet is based on the PhD works of C. Czapla (2000), G. Modes (2000), H. Klocker (1996), T. Kronberger (1995), M. Marters (2000), M. Roos (2000), M. Traving (2000) and B. Wachter (1996) who I wish to thank for their fruitful contributions.

Process Equipment and Plant Design: Principles and Practices takes a holistic approach towards process design in the chemical engineering industry, dealing with the design of individual process equipment and its configuration as a complete functional system. Chapters cover typical heat and mass transfer systems and equipment included in a chemical engineering curriculum, such as heat exchangers, heat exchanger networks, evaporators, distillation, absorption, adsorption, reactors and more. The authors expand on additional topics such as industrial cooling systems, extraction, and topics on process utilities, piping and hydraulics, including instrumentation and safety basics that supplement the equipment design procedure and help to arrive at a complete plant design. The chapters are arranged in sections pertaining to heat and mass transfer processes, reacting systems, plant hydraulics and process vessels, plant auxiliaries, and engineered safety as well as a separate chapter showcasing examples of process design in complete plants. This comprehensive reference bridges the gap between industry and academia, while exploring best practices in design, including relevant theories in process design making this a valuable primer for fresh graduates and professionals working on design projects in the industry. - Serves as a consolidated resource for process and plant design, including process utilities and engineered safety - Bridges the gap between industry and academia by including practices in design and summarizing relevant theories - Presents design solutions as a complete functional system and not merely the design of major equipment - Provides design procedures as pseudo-code/flow-chart, along with practical considerations

Plant Drug Analysis has proven an invaluable and unique aid for all those involved with drug production and analysis, including pharmacists, chemical and pharmaceutical researchers and technicians, drug importers and exporters, governmental chemical control agencies, and health authorities. From the reviews of the German Edition: "The reviewer would like to recommend this excellent book to all chromatographers, as he considers it highly relevant to the solution of numerous problems. Its main purpose is the demonstration of thin-layer chromatograms of the usual commercial drugs as an aid in testing for identity and purity. ... 165 colour plates, each showing 6 chromatograms and all of superb quality photographs ..."
