Of the many books dealing with this topic, this one possibly is the best yet; it is both practical and hopeful for the victim as well as the caregiver. Josephs argues that no two strokes are alike (patients cannot accept generalizations); that the medical profession knows little, if anything, about what to do and, therefore, really doesn't care. Furthermore, he states that the so-called "six months'' period of getting well can extend for years. While this reviewer may not agree with the author's approach on certain issues (e.g., cholesterol, support groups), the book's avoidance of medicalese and its positive, easy-to-read tone make it a good choice for all popular medical collections.
