My sister Altagracia Marta Casado had ovarian cancer. Members of the church were called to come and pray for her. They said she had cancer because she was possessed by a demon. Their idea of prayer was to point a finger at her while yelling at her, telling the demon to come out. When she passed away, they said she died because she had no faith. The horrible spiritual crimes committed against the children of God by pastors and preachers is what you will find in this book. You will also find the sad story of a group of homosexuals who went to church hoping to have an encounter with Jesus. Many have stopped attending church after experiencing spiritual abuse by those who have distorted the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This book is also for pastors and preachers.

The issue of eternal life – where and how we will spend eternity – is the most consequential issue we will face in life. The difference in the consequences to us, if we receive eternal life or fail to receive it, are as extreme as they could possibly be. Moreover, we will have to live with the consequences forever. Jesus tells us that entering into eternal life is difficult: many will seek to enter and will not be able to. Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. (Luke 13:24) The cost of failing to enter eternal life is so great that we would be beyond foolish not to seek the truth about eternal life with commensurate diligence. The Truth About Eternal Life is written to help in that search. A: Eternal Life We significantly help ourselves find the path leading to eternal life by seeking out what eternal life is. This simple step is easily overlooked. A good understanding of what eternal life is helps us find the path leading to it, perceive our status relative to that path, and perceive our status relative to eternal life itself. There is a type of life available to us that we are not born with. This life is characterized by shalom – love, peace, truth, and freedom – including freedom from fear and anxiety. This is eternal life and we may partake of it now during our temporal life. God gives us eternal life through his Word. B: Our Current Condition We are born with a type of life characterized by corrupt desires. These desires bring forth death and are incompatible with eternal life. To receive eternal life we must remove the corrupt desires from our being. C: God's Provision God has given us provision to help us remove the corrupt desires, become compatible with eternal life, and receive it. God sends his Spirit of Truth to guide us into all truth. If we ask him he will send him to guide us into the truth of eternal life. God has also given truth to us in 1 John that helps us know if we have received eternal life. D: What Must We do? We must enter into a new covenant with God through which he helps us remove corrupt desires, become compatible with eternal life and receive it. We must be cleansed from the sin caused by the corrupt desires and sow God's Word into our hearts so it can produce eternal life in us.

In this twenty-second volume of the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, author Paul M. Zehr explores Paul’s instructions to Timothy and Titus in light of recent scholarship, applying Christian theology and ethics to the political, philosophical, religious, and cultural issues that early Christians faced as the church reached out in mission in Ephesus and on the island of Crete. Additionally, Zehr also shows how the themes in 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus have been interpreted and applied in the history of the church, especially the believers church. His interpretive process includes both a vertical reading of each book separately and a horizontal reading of the themes found in all three letters. Check out other commentaries in this series! Endorsements “This is a remarkably readable commentary on the pastoral epistles. It successfully and perhaps uniquely provides sound exegesis at a level that is adequate for the preacher; sets the theological themes in their wider biblical contexts; and surveys the history of the interpretation and influence of the letters, particularly in the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition. I warmly commend this attractive presentation, which should greatly encourage and assist exposition of these fascinating letters.” —I. Howard Marshall, University of Aberdeen, Scotland “This commentary by Paul Zehr provides helpful guidance to interpret important but difficult passages in a contemporary Anabaptist manner. Zehr is alert to current ecumenical and evangelical scholarship on the pastorals, to the historical and cultural contexts reflected in these books, to the difficult issues of authorship, and to the energy of these letters for the well-being of healthy church leadership.” —John A. Esau, former Mennonite pastor and denominational administrator “With careful scholarship and a Christ-centered hermeneutic, Paul Zehr has given to the church an insightful guide in understanding the pastoral epistles. He seeks to work carefully with the cultural background of these scriptures, their context in the larger Scripture, and in applications to our setting. He does not back away from engaging the difficult issues that have divided groups but calls us to follow Paul’s example of contextualizing applications.” —Myron S. Augsburger, President & Professor Emeritus of Eastern Mennonite University “Dr. Zehr’s commentary brings the most accessible scholarship, knowledge of the first-century cultural/historical settings and a keen interest in the meaning of the text for today’s church into a most engaging combination for pastors and church leaders alike. Their task in making the biblical text relevant in the twenty-first century is greatly helped by this volume in the Believers Church Bible Commentary Series.” —Philip H. Towner, Dean, The Nida Institute for Biblical Scholarship, American Bible Society

We can become so constricted by liturgical rituals that we cannot love God in our own way. When we cannot live up to the impossible standards that have been placed on us by some denomination or faith group, we may start to feel bad about ourselves, and that only takes us farther and farther away from God. When we come to church to meet with like-minded individuals in search of spiritual reinforcement or support, human rules and regulations grafted on to religion often make us feel belittled, as if we are doing everything wrong. Rather than finding absolution from our sins, we are made to feel inadequate. The message of Jesus Christ is a message of hope and love for all people. Scripture is beautifully written, and when we delve into it deeply, when we uncover its mysteries, that leads to enlightenment. As Christians, we are called on to imitate Christ. That is why it is so important that we closely study the words and actions of Jesus Christeverything He did, every move He made, everything He said, and how He delivered it. Jesus only rarely became angry, but He was never hateful. That is Gods way. We will never be Christ, but we should try to imitate Him as closely as possible. However, when it comes to spirituality, we are our own worst enemies, constantly getting in Gods way. What we need to do more than anything else is to get out of Gods way.
