Kuan Yin, the ancient Chinese goddess of Compassion, is the principal goddess in the Eastern firmament. Wherever there are Chinese or Japanese speaking people in the world - in homes, restaurants, workplaces, small urban temples and shrines - Kuan Yin's image can be found. The ritual of consulting her has brought solace, hope and insight to countless people and it continues to be an integral part of the lives of tens of millions of people throughout the East today. Stephen Karcher's interpretation of this ancient text presents 'The 100 Poems of the Goddess', as relevant today as they were 1000 years ago, in an extremely easy to use and amazingly insightful form. Simply ask the oracle a question. By opening your heart to the answer, you allow yourself to be 're-arranged' by the symbol or figure Kuan Yin gives you. Then turn to the relevant page for that symbol in the book, where you will find directions to help you focus your energy and choose the right path to find an answer.

Kuan Yin, the Compassionate One or literally the one who sees and hears the cries of the world is the principal goddess in the eastern firmament. She is centuries older than the Christian Virgin Mary but not unconnected with her in that in most illustrations she holds a rosary, suggesting purification of the cycle of birth and death, and a willow branch, a symbol of Buddhist virtues.

Compassionate, bountiful, and the most popular female Buddhist deity, Kuan Yin is the great protector. Invoked as Kannon in Japan, Tara in Tibet, and Kuan Yin in China, she is a practical goddess, consulted by millions, offering useful advice for everyday problems. The first oracle of its kind, this entertaining kit includes a book -- with an introduction, easy-to-follow instructions, and 100 Poems of the Oracle -- as well as a statue of the goddess, and 100 numbered bamboo "Sticks of Fate". How it works: when readers have a question for Kuan Yin, they place the sticks in a bamboo shaker, hold it at an angle, and shake it from side to side. One stick will fall out, and the answer is determined by the number on the stick, which corresponds to one of the Poems. The statue provides a serene visual focal point for the ritual.

In May of 1985, an international symposium was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in honor of John M. Crawford, Jr., whose gifts of Chinese calligraphy and painting have constituted a significant addition to the Museum's holdings. Over a three-day period, senior scholars from China, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, and the United States expressed a wide range of perspectives on an issue central to the history of Chinese visual aesthetics: the relationships between poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The practice of integrating the three art forms-known as san-chiieh, or the three perfections-in one work of art emerged during the Sung and Yuan dynasties largely in the context of literati culture, and it has stimulated lively critical discussion ever since. This publication contains twenty-three essays based on the papers presented at the Crawford symposium. Grouped by subject matter in a roughly chronological order, these essays reflect research on topics spanning two millennia of Chinese history. The result is an interdisciplinary exploration of the complex set of relationships between words and images by art historians, literary historians, and scholars of calligraphy. Their findings provide us with a new level of understanding of this rich and complicated subject and suggest further directions for the study of Chinese art history. The essays are accompanied by 255 illustrations, some of which reproduce works rarely published. Chinese characters have been provided throughout the text for artists names, terms, titles of works of art and literature, and important historical figures, as well as for excerpts of selected poetry and prose. A chronology, also containing Chinese characters, and an extensive index contribute to making this book illuminating and invaluable to both the specialist and the layman.

The first volume of An Encyclopedia of Archetypal Symbolism was a stunning collection of color images and text organized around mythic themes that follow the solar calendar from cosmos and creation to death, transformation, and rebirth. In this second volume, the focus is the human body as a carrier of deep psychological insights and sacred meanings. Whether idolized or abused, the body is the object of much fascinated attention, even obsessive preoccupation, in the contemporary Western world. What has been missing from our culture's preoccupation is an appreciation of the body's organs as symbols of the deepest contents of the human psyche. This book surveys the richness of meaning found in a wide range of beautiful sacred images from the world's traditions and explains what the symbolism of our physical form teaches us about the inner realities of our consciousness, spirit, and divine essence.

This powerful book on the Kuan Yin prophecies and spiritual teachings is an updated version of the spiritual classic: "The Living Word of Kuan Yin: The Teachings and Prophecies of the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy." According to Kuan Yin, earth is the most important step in our evolution where we, as limitless beings, achieve physical manifestation in all of its complexities; where beliefs, intentions and desires are the driving forces for reality. Compassion at the level personified by Kuan Yin is not some luxury sentiment that might be expressed towards others at the appropriate moment. Indeed, it is at the very core of our survival. And as Kuan Yin's Law of Compassion is intimately connected with all daily choices and emotions, such compassionate feelings on the part of the ego will join and expand the great rhapsody of light and sound stretching beyond any time/space constraints. Kuan Yin's eternal wisdom can help you to understand: * Your purpose in life * Oneness * Kuan Yin's powerful spiritual meditations * The Love and Forgiveness Principle * How the moment is one's link to eternity * The power of sound and vibration * The power of imagination * Reincarnation * Love and relationships
