Delinquent Daughters explores the gender, class, and racial tensions that fueled campaigns to control female sexuality in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Mary Odem looks at these moral reform movements from a national perspective, but she also undertakes a detailed analysis of court records to explore the local enforcement of regulatory legislation in Alameda and Los Angeles Counties in California. From these legal proceedings emerge overlapping and often contradictory views of middle-class female reformers, court and law enforcement officials, working-class teenage girls, and working-class parents. Odem traces two distinct stages of moral reform. The first began in 1885 with the movement to raise the age of consent in statutory rape laws as a means of protecting young women from predatory men. By the turn of the century, however, reformers had come to view sexually active women not as victims but as delinquents, and they called for special police, juvenile courts, and reformatories to control wayward girls. Rejecting a simple hierarchical model of class control, Odem reveals a complex network of struggles and negotiations among reformers, officials, teenage girls and their families. She also addresses the paradoxical consequences of reform by demonstrating that the protective measures advocated by middle-class women often resulted in coercive and discriminatory policies toward working-class girls.

"The statement of our findings has gradually assumed the scope of a text or reference book, the first on the subject. We hope for our science the growth that other sciences have experienced; there is great necessity for further research, but extensions and modifications are to be embodied only as their truth is assured. It would take long to specify the parts of our subject with which people of various affairs should be familiar. Judges, other court officers, including lawyers, and institutional authorities, should have a particularly well-rounded knowledge of the whole field. Without the most thoughtful observation a great deal is hidden from view, as may be easily appreciated by consideration of our cases and causal types. Psychologists, physicians, religious leaders, school people, and, not least of all, parents, should be in possession of many of our fundamental facts. All who have to deal with offenders need the utmost possible understandings of human beings"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved).

The central idea of this book is that the widespread "crisis" of juvenile delinquency can be grappled with only if one first understands delinquency as a persistent subculture that is traditional in certain neighborhoods of our cities.

I'm the kid your parents warned you about... Eighteen months in prison or doing time at Oceanside Academy. Reform school has met its match in me, even if it is full of young offenders. Thieves, graffiti writers, drug runners and other petty criminals reside within the walls, and I'm just like them. But what they didn't tell me was that I'd be one of only a handful of girls in a hoard full of boys. It'll take more than just street smarts to keep my wits about me. Everyone here has a chip on their shoulders, and I'm no different. Mine's one of the biggest. That's why they call me Asia because I have one as large as a continent. Rules or not, these bad boys are about to discover I've earned my label for reason... I'm the biggest misfit of them all.

Designed for undergraduate juvenile delinquency courses, this book actively involves students in the literature of the discipline, presents the field in a format that is accessible, understandable, and enjoyable, and is edited by well-known scholars who are experienced researchers and teachers. * The readings in this anthology have been very carefully edited and pruned by the Editors so that undergraduate students can easily read them without getting bogged down or confused and lost in the technical, methodological details. * At no additional cost, we have included 5 substantial data analysis exercises spread throughout the book. These exercises not only teach students the basic of SPSS, the "standard" data analysis software in social science, but also show them how they can test the delinquency theories and propositions covered in the reader, using current delinquency data packaged with the book. This absolutely unique feature is structured into fill-in-the-blank exercise sets that are easy to grade for large numbers of students by a single instructor. * Over 150 very good questions have been put together for the readings so that instructors can easily test, even in large courses, whether or not their students are keeping up with the reading. * A separate instructor's manual (with more tests) is also available.
