"Absolutely riveting . . . Essential reading for foodies, java-junkies, anthropologists, and anyone else interested in funny, sardonically told adventure stories." —Anthony Bourdain, author of Kitchen Confidential Full of humor and historical insights, The Devil’s Cup is not only ahistory of coffee, but a travelogue of a risk-taking brew-seeker. In this captivating book, Stewart Lee Allen treks three-quarters of the way around the world on a caffeinated quest to answer these profound questions: Did the advent of coffee give birth to an enlightened western civilization? Is coffee the substance that drives history? From the cliffhanging villages of Southern Yemen, where coffee beans were first cultivated eight hundred years ago, to a cavernous coffeehouse in Calcutta, the drinking spot for two of India’s Nobel Prize winners . . . from Parisian salons and cafés where the French Revolution was born, to the roadside diners and chain restaurants of the good ol’ USA, where something resembling brown water passes for coffee, Allen wittily proves that the world was wired long before the Internet. And those who deny the power of coffee (namely tea drinkers) do so at their own peril.

An explosive end to the Walking Between Worlds trilogy. Heaven is in turmoil over the war being waged below. Hell is a ravaged wasteland, its beauty lost to all but ancient memory. Earth is trapped between, unaware of the army of supernaturals battling for their souls. A champion emerges to lead them, and to search for their lost king. His new student sees the timeless art of dealing with demons in an astonishingly unique way; it makes William question everything he is supposed to be teaching the warrior apprentice, while battling day and night to save the way of the Walker. Ruling from their lofty perches, the angels have long since lost their way. They want control of everything, and will stop at nothing to get it. Barely an army, the remaining demon hunters dodge plots from above and fire from below in their hopes to secretly save the worlds they walk between once more. The dragons that reign in Hell have grown more brutal over long centuries; when one queen fell, a more fearsome dragon took her place. It will take more than one miracle to stop her from setting all the worlds aflame forever. Fall of the Walker King is the third novel in the Walking Between Worlds universe, a supernatural story set in Heaven, Hell, and San Francisco. The Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English is a revised and expanded edition of the Weatherford Award–winning Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, published in 2005 and known in Appalachian studies circles as the most comprehensive reference work dedicated to Appalachian vernacular and linguistic practice. Editors Michael B. Montgomery and Jennifer K. N. Heinmiller document the variety of English used in parts of eight states, ranging from West Virginia to Georgia—an expansion of the first edition's geography, which was limited primarily to North Carolina and Tennessee—and include over 10,000 entries drawn from over 2,200 sources. The entries include approximately 35,000 citations to provide the reader with historical context, meaning, and usage. Around 1,600 of those examples are from letters written by Civil War soldiers and their family members, and another 4,000 are taken from regional oral history recordings. Decades in the making, the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English surpasses the original by thousands of entries. There is no work of this magnitude available that so completely illustrates the rich language of the Smoky Mountains and Southern Appalachia.

When Michael Hogan started writing, he never set out to pen a poetry collection. He simply told stories of his dad and, over time, the stories became confessionals in rhyme. Watching someone suffer through the terrible disease of alcoholism taught Michael many life lessons—ones he never wanted to learn. The only way to exorcise those old demons was to write. Simply Free is a collection of words that ring true to any child, spouse, or family member of an addict. In “Something’s Wrong, Dad,” he gives voice to a child’s fear. Who are you, Dad? You change too much Like when you drink, is that your crutch? What’s in the bottle you crave so dearly? It doesn’t help me see you clearly I pray, I pray for things to turn Steady my mind from the churn Only my dad controls the change Please, Dad, don’t be so strange. Dedicated to his dad, Simply Free flowed much easier than Michael originally expected. He believed sharing his thoughts and feelings would be unsettling—instead, the poems set him free. Through words happy and sad, read of hope postaddiction and the love of a child for his father.

When William Kite runs away to sea to escape a charge of murder, he finds himself aboard the Enterprize, a Liverpool Guineaman, or slave ship, destined for the coast of West Africa. Once loaded with slaves, the ship then crosses the Atlantic, bound for the sugar plantations of the West Indies. Despite the accusation hanging over him, Kite’s compassion for the slaves’ helplessness finds him serving as a surgeon on the ship, exposed to the dreaded yellow fever. But as the Seven Years’ War looms on the horizon, Kite’s life will be threatened by more than just sickness... The first in the William Kite Naval Adventures, The Guineaman is perfect for fans of Patrick O’Brian, Julian Stockwin and C.S. Forester.
